The Desperado star posted a tweet to say he has contracted the illness today, on his 60th birthday.

Sharing a photo of himself as a baby, the Oscar-nominated star also shared a statement in Spanish, which, translated to English reads: “Greetings to you all. I want to make public that today, 10th of August, I am forced to celebrate my 60th birthday in quarantine after being tested positive for COVID-19, caused by coronavirus.

“I would like to add that I’m relatively fine, just a little bit more tired than usual and confident to recover as soon as possible following the medical indications that I hope will allow me to overcome the infectious process that I suffer and that people is affecting around the planet.

“I will take advantage of this isolation to read, write and rest, continue making plans to begin to give meaning to my newly released 60 years to which came loaded with desire and illusion.

“Big hug to everyone.”

Banderas’ announcement comes after he celebrated girlfriend, investment adviser, Nicole Kimpel’s 39th birthday in Malaga, per the Daily Mail.

He spends most of his time at his home in Surrey in the United Kingdom.

It is unclear where he contracted the virus at this point.

In March, the Mask of Zorro actor tweeted about coronavirus, sharing an informative video from the World Health Organization. He wrote: “#Coronavirus knows no race, gender, creed, faith or borders. We’re all in this together and more than ever before we need solidarity. Be kind. Be safe. Be smart. I’m joining @undpto spread the word, not the virus.”

Production on Banderas’ upcoming film, Official Competition, was suspended due to the pandemic earlier this year.

Banderas is due to star opposite his Pain and Glory co-star Penelope Cruz in the Spanish-language comedy from Argentine directors Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.

Per Deadline, The film follows a billionaire who hires Cruz’s character as a director to recreate an iconic movie. Banderas stars a local heartthrob Félix Rivero. Argentine actor Oscar Martínez also stars.

Other actors who have tested positive for the virus include Idris Elba, Mel Gibson, and Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson.
