One quick answer from Technical Director Brenon Holmes this past week is particularly interesting given that E3 2018 is quickly approaching. Reddit user darthArt007 posed the following question: “Is the [gameplay] we’ve seen so far still representative of the game?” His question stemming from a trend of titles downgrading game visuals compared to when they were first announced. The first half of Holmes’ response, a brief “Yep!,” was exciting to hear.

Anthem’s E3 2017 gameplay trailer, for those that don’t recall, showed off more than 6 minutes of traversal and action. It involved flying down from a high-elevation base down into the wilderness of Anthem, several Javelin exo-suits that make up the game’s classes, and a variety of enemies too. To say it was visually impressive would be a gross understatement.

The second half of Brenon Holmes’ response on Reddit is nothing that hasn’t already been shared, but it is still exciting to hear. Holmes says, “I’m sure you’ll see confirmation of this soon.” The implication being that EA and BioWare will be showing off additional Anthem gameplay “soon.”

“Soon” is a term that everyone understands is malleable and tentative, of course, but given EA’s confidence in tying Anthem to the publisher’s E3 press conference “soon” should be within the next month and a half. For those who just can’t wait, there’s always a chance that new Anthem material will be shared prior to E3. Given the past few E3s, it’s a growing trend for E3 marketing campaigns to begin weeks before the event itself. May will be littered with new game announcements, trailers, and more.

Anthem being a 2019 game may prevent it from such a large marketing push, but on the other hand, Anthem being such a huge game points to EA going all out this E3. Either way, there will be plenty of Anthem gameplay to evaluate soon enough.

Anthem is tentatively planned for early 2019 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
