Even Bill Murray’s appearance in the trailer for Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania doesn’t offer up many clues about his character to the audience. Other than the fact that he appears to be present in the Quantum Realm itself, there’s not much for the audience to go out. Multiple outlets are reporting him playing one Marvel character in particular, though Marvel itself hasn’t confirmed a character name for Murray.

One thing MCU fans know for sure about Bill Murray’s character in the Ant-Man sequel is that he is slated to play a villain. While Marvel might not have initially wanted to reveal that Murray was even in the movie, he admitted he would be playing a villain in a rare interview.
That was a surprising piece of news for a lot of people if only because it was believed that Kang (Jonathan Majors) would be the primary villain of the piece. With the movie set to include multiple villains though, like MODOK, fans quickly began to speculate that Murray could be playing MODOK, Molecule Man, or any number of other villains in the movie. With no information other than the inclusion of Kang, a teenage Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), and the Quantum Realm, there wasn’t much for fans to speculate about. The name Krylar didn’t really pop up until recently.
Some news outlets are reporting that Murray will play the Marvel comic book character Krylar from the movie, but as usual, Marvel still hasn’t officially confirmed the character will even appear in Quantumania. Even if they had, a lot of Marvel fans would likely be scratching their heads at the inclusion of the character. (There was a character named Krylar who appeared in a single episode of Agents of SHIELD, but they are not the same.)
Krylar made his comic book debut in a 1972 issue of The Incredible Hulk. Specifically, in #156, and was created by Archie Goodwin and Herb Trimpe. He also only appeared in that issue over the course of a few pages.
The comic actually follows the Hulk on a journey into the Micro-verse, a place not unlike the Quantum Realm where an entire universe exists that is smaller than known matter. There, Hulk, with his mind actually under the control of Bruce Banner, discovers that the woman he loves has been kidnaped by a warlord and her village has been destroyed. It’s there that Krylar comes in. He’s not the warlord, but a scientist working for him.
Krylar is in charge of a piece of machinery that can create what someone most fears. For Bruce Banner, that’s a Hulk that is completely out of his control, which is then what’s created, and he has to battle the other being. Krylar doesn’t make it out of the story alive.
That might seem like an odd choice for a villain in an Ant-Man movie, but the idea of a visit to another universe in which the hero has to be shrunken down to size, and a villain playing on the hero’s deepest fears, will work well for Ant-Man.
What’s not clear is just how (or if at all) faithful to the comics Bill Murray would be as a character like Krylar. There is very little story for the character, so there’s very little for comic book fans to compare him to. That could very much work in the movie’s favor if the rumor turns out to be true.
That would give the writers and the actors free rein to do pretty much anything with Krylar. It would also be relatively easy to make him work for Kang in the Quantum Realm instead of a warlord that doesn’t have any story momentum for the MCU. The audience already knows that Kang is going to be the larger looming threat with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on the way, so he doesn’t have to be the main villain of the movie if Murray brings his own unique style to a lesser-known character.
The real question is whether Murray’s villain will be a one-off as so many other MCU bad guys have been, or if he’ll get to return in another chapter of the MCU. If he is indeed playing Krylar, perhaps the MCU could tie him to Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in a future movie appearance after all.
