The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era is planned to be a cooperative tabletop fantasy adventure game. It’s intended for 1 to 4 players, with robust systems for character progression and combat. That includes a wide selection of skills and spells drawn from The Elder Scrolls Online, not to mention character classes inspired by heroes from the game and universe. It is, like the other board games based on The Elder Scrolls before it, effectively an RPG.

The board game’s setting and its story will all draw from The Elder Scrolls Online and The Elder Scrolls overall, as well. According to an initial description of the game’s story, players will be involved in an effort by King of the Worms Mannicarco’s attempt to join Coldharbour, a plane of Oblivion, with Nirn. It’s also confirmed that the adventure will see players crossing all over Tamriel, rather than being restricted to any single region.

The team behind The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Age is well-experienced. Chip Theory Games is known for games including Cloudspire, Burncycle, and Too Many Bones, among others. The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Age will be Chip Theory Games’ largest project yet, however, but that’s perhaps expected from a crossover with The Elder Scrolls.

Chip Theory Games has also confirmed that it’s working with Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls Online team directly on the game. The extent of this isn’t entirely clear. It could just be to ensure the authenticity of the world in The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era. But it will be interesting to see if it leads to more specific ties to The Elder Scrolls Online and or any other Elder Scrolls games.

The one area left unexplained by the announcement of The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Age is Chip Theory Games’ plans for funding and release. Board games, particularly licensed board games, almost always do a crowdfunding drive of some kind, so news of that is likely coming soon. Until then, those interested can follow Chip Theory Games on social media for more information as it’s made available.
