The State Attorney’s Office will announce the decision at 2 p.m., according to multiple reports. State Attorney Willie Meggs will make the announcement at his Tallahassee office.
On Monday, Meggs said he would not let football dictate when the investigation would be completed. Winston is considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy — voters have a Dec. 9 deadline to make their selection — and the Seminoles play Saturday night in the ACC Championship Game against Duke. If FSU beats Duke, it will play in the BCS Championship Game in January.
Prosecutors have been working to determine if charges should be filed against Winston. Winston’s attorney suggested that Winston and the accuser had consensual sex, but the woman’s family said in a statement that it was rape.
WALTER CAMP FINALISTS NAMED
Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award, announced Wednesday.
Manziel is joined by FSU quarterback Jameis Winston, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch and Boston College running back Andre Williams.
Winston is the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy, but he has also been accused of a sexual assault and been under investigation by law enforcement in Florida.
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o won the award last season.
WINSTON, DONALD HONORED
Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has picked up two more individual awards from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The ACC on Wednesday selected Winston as both its overall and offensive player of the year, one day after he was picked as rookie of the year.
Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald also was voted the ACC's defensive player of the year.
Winston is the first redshirt freshman in the 61-year history of the league to win the award.
He received 47 of 65 votes from members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association for the overall award. Boston College running back Andre Williams had 13 votes and Donald had four.
Winston led the Seminoles to a No. 1 ranking and a berth in the ACC championship game opposite No. 20 Duke.
He is the first Florida State player to win the award since Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke in 2000.
Winston leads the nation with a 192.6 pass efficiency rating, is tops in the ACC with 3,490 yards passing and 35 touchdown passes and has emerged as a leading Heisman candidate.
He's one touchdown shy of the FBS record for freshmen, set by Oklahoma's Sam Bradford in 2007.
Florida State ranks second nationally in scoring, averaging 53.7 points. The Seminoles are seventh in total offense with an average of 526.1 total yards.
In separate offensive player of the year voting, Winston had 44 votes to 19 for Williams and two for Clemson QB Tajh Boyd.
Donald had 44 votes for the defensive award to 10 for Wake Forest nose tackle Nikita Whitlock and eight for Florida State cornerback Lamarcus Joyner.
Donald leads the nation with 26½ tackles for losses, and has 10 sacks and four forced fumbles. His blocked extra point in the Panthers' 17-16 win over Syracuse on Nov. 23 made them bowl eligible.
MARTIN GETS 5-YEAR DEAL
Chuck Martin got a five-year contract to try to restore Miami of Ohio's football program.
Notre Dame's offensive coordinator takes over a team that failed to win a game last season (0-12), only Miami's fourth winless season since 1900. The RedHawks are 8-28 over the last three seasons.
Martin was introduced on Wednesday, a day after agreeing to become the next coach. He is the latest addition to the "Cradle of Coaches," a legacy that includes Notre Dame's Ara Parseghian.
The RedHawks fired coach Don Treadwell after they lost their first five games this season. Offensive coordinator Mike Bath was interim coach for the rest of the season.
GRAMBLING HIRES HEAD COACH
Grambling State has named current McNeese State tight ends coach Broderick Fobbs as the Tigers' next head coach, hoping he can not only win but also heal a strained relationship between players and the administration.
Fobbs, whose hiring was announced Wednesday, will remain with McNeese through the Cowboys' second-round FCS playoff game Saturday. He'll then take over for Dennis "Dirt" Winston, who was Grambling's second interim coach of 2013, a season defined by a midseason player walkout that forced the cancellation of Jackson State's homecoming game in October.
Fobbs has a Grambling background. The son of Grambling graduates, he played running back for the Tigers in the mid-1990s for former Hall of Fame coach Eddie Robinson.
"It's an opportunity I've always dreamed of at a place where I've always dreamed of being," Fobbs said. "I stand on the shoulders of a number of great men, and many of them coached and mentored me. They instilled in me the importance of GSU's expectations, history and legacy and we're going to do just what they expect and deserve."
Fobbs, 39, also has been an assistant coach at Northwestern State.
Grambling wrapped up a school-worst 1-11 season with a 40-17 loss to Southern in the Bayou Classic last Saturday. In 2012, the Tigers were 1-10.
"I couldn't be happier that Broderick has agreed to return home and lead our football program back to greatness," Grambling President Frank Pogue said. "It's obvious that we've had a couple of truly difficult seasons, and that's not something that Grambling State alums and supporters are used to — and we're about to change that with Fobbs."
